Treating Mouldy Ceilings

INTRODUCTION

Mouldy or water damaged ceilings are caused by poor room ventilation and or roof leaks. Before performing any repairs you must determine the root cause of the damage. Roof leaks should be addressed by a professionally qualified roof plumber. The most common damage occurs in wet areas such as bathrooms, toilets and laundries. This is a result of poor ventilation. Install an exhaust fan, or install ceiling vents, open windows.

REMOVE MOULD

Dilute bleach in clean water and apply with a sponge or mop. Make sure you wear protective eyewear and gloves. Return after 5 to ten minutes and wipe down with clean water. Repeat this process as required. Allow to dry

PLASTER PATCH

Lay down drop clothes. Back fill any areas that require patching with rapid set plaster. Add a little PVA glue to the mix for better adhesion. This type of plaster sets rapidly. You can also use a heat gun to speed up the drying process, but don’t hold the gun too close or you blister the paint.

PAINT

Sand the dry plaster flush and apply a coat of primer. Allow to dry and apply 2 coats of ceiling paint

It really is that simple.
